How Email Open & Click Tracking Works (And Why You Need It)

Tracking pixels, click redirects, open-rate benchmarks — how to use email tracking data to improve every campaign you send.

Published February 1, 2025 · By RAPID SMTP

If you can't measure your email campaigns, you can't improve them. Open and click tracking are the two metrics that turn email from a leap-of-faith into a data-driven channel. Here's how both work under the hood, and how to use the numbers RAPID SMTP gives you.

How open tracking works

Every tracked email contains a tiny invisible image — a "tracking pixel" — that's typically 1×1 pixel and transparent. The image URL looks something like:

https://smtp.rapidhostbd.com/api/public/track/open/{logId}

When the recipient opens the email and their client loads remote images, that URL gets requested. The server logs the request and marks the email as "opened".

The catch: image blocking and Apple Mail Privacy Protection

Many recipients (especially on Apple Mail) prefetch images automatically, which inflates open rates. Conversely, recipients who never load images appear to "never open" — even when they did. Treat open rates as a relative trend, not an absolute truth.

How click tracking works

Click tracking rewrites every link in your email to go through your sender first. So https://yoursite.com/sale becomes:

https://smtp.rapidhostbd.com/api/public/track/click/{logId}?u=https://yoursite.com/sale

When clicked, the server logs the click and instantly redirects the recipient to the real URL. The user sees no delay, but you get a row in your analytics.

Benchmarks for Bangladesh marketers (2025)

  • Open rate: 18–28% is healthy for marketing; 35%+ for transactional.
  • Click rate (CTR): 2–5% for marketing; 8%+ for highly targeted segments.
  • Click-to-open rate (CTOR): 10–20% is the goal — it's the metric to optimize, not raw opens.

What to do with the data

Subject line testing

If opens drop, your subject line is the culprit 90% of the time. Send the same campaign to a 10% sample with two subject lines, pick the winner, send to the rest.

Send-time optimization

Look at the hour your highest-opening recipients tend to open. Schedule future sends to land just before that window.

Re-engagement

Subscribers who haven't opened anything in 90 days drag your sender reputation down. Send them a "Are you still interested?" campaign and remove the ones who don't respond.

Click heatmaps

If 80% of clicks go to one button, move that button higher in your next email. If a link gets zero clicks, kill it.

Privacy and compliance

Tracking is legal in most jurisdictions when you have a legitimate marketing relationship and an unsubscribe option. Always:

  • Disclose tracking in your privacy policy.
  • Honor opt-outs immediately.
  • Consider per-recipient tracking opt-out for EU contacts (GDPR).

How RAPID SMTP makes this effortless

Tracking is on by default for every campaign. You see real-time opens, clicks, and unsubscribes per email and per campaign in the dashboard. For the broader strategy, see our deliverability checklist and the 2025 BD email marketing guide.
