An email that could not be delivered. Hard bounces are permanent; soft bounces are temporary.

Hard bounces (invalid mailbox, domain doesn't exist) must be suppressed immediately. Soft bounces (full inbox, temporary failure) can be retried. Bounce-rate >2% damages sender reputation fast.
